Une Semaine de Bonte (1 Point)

This one was very hard to translate because I was trying so hard to comprehend the pictures. Maybe it's because I'm having a hard time deciphering what's even in the photos due to lack of contrast in some of them.

I definitely think it has something to do with livestock. I've heard that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an allegory for how awfully we treat pigs and cattle, and I feel like this might be going in the same direction, just with chickens. The chickens in almost every photo are torturing, stalking, scaring, or kissing humans. I think this is talking about how we treat livestock as pets, but will ultimately use them for what they're worth and end up culling them in the end. Even the kissing makes sense to me because people love their pets and kiss them all the time. I'm not a pet owner or a vegan/vegetarian, but I feel like that's what is being said here.

It could also be a bit more general than that as well. It could just be talking about how humans abuse their power over weaker creatures just because we're smarter than them. This is the chicken's revenge; if they can integrate into society they will most certainly try to take us over and show us who really are in charge.

Nanking (6 Points)

This piece was beautifully illustrated and written, and really knew how to pack a punch right to the heart-strings. The way they constructed the narrative of the little girl being the one to tie all of these people together is brilliantly done. Sadly, the story itself is not really an uplifting one.  I wasn't aware of what happened to other countries during WWII. When they taught us in school they spoke about only the bombing of Pearl Harbor and told us that the holocaust was the worst thing to happen in human history. But getting to know the finer details of things is really what makes us educated and I had no idea what was happening in the Eastern countries. I'm touched that at the end of Nanking, the woman says she forgave the Japanese for what happened because nothing good could come out of war anyway. But she had lost everything and everyone she had in that awful siege of Nanking. They may have took all she had that was left, but thankfully she had people who were there...

The Killing Joke (2)

  1. What is your reaction to the text you just read? Eh, it was kind of underwhelming. I'm already not a huge superhero fan, but I do think Batman is probably one of the comics I could probably get into the easiest because I think his dynamic with the Joker is interesting. Since it's an origin story of the Joker, I was really hoping it would clear up a lot more than it did. In fact, I think it didn't really clear anything up at all. It left me with more questions than answers. Why are you going to portray this in a way that relies heavily on mental instability and not approach it realistically? I don't mean this as in I was offended by it or anything, either. I purely mean it in a way that even from a superhero perspective, it was trying too hard to be meaningful and fell flat. It just didn't make sense. His wife dies, they literally do not bring her up ever again, the Joker barely shows emotion towards it, and then he falls into a radio active puddle?? And that...

Suicide Boy (6)

This one was something. I saw the title of it and said, "Alright what the hell is this." I don't know how I feel about this comic! I liked it, but also I felt weird reading it because it was subtly horny and you could TELL. Which is very confusing especially since it's supposed to be talking about serious stuff like self-harm and depression. Like I would be reading it and enjoying it's strange dark humor, but then there would be random really suggestive stuff happening to the main character who is a suicidal TEENAGER and I would feel super gross. Somehow I read the entire thing through to it's up-to-date issue, because I really wanted the main character to get better and you know, have character development with the friends he made, but there's something off here. I literally just googled the title and suggestive pictures of the main character came up, I don't know how I avoided this until right now since whatever I saw was much less obvious, but there...
